Over 50pc pregnant women in Swat face malnutrition

MINGORA: Nutrition experts here on Wednesday disclosed that about 58 per cent pregnant and breastfeeding women faced food deficiency across the Swat district.

They were speaking at a quarterly meeting of the district multi-sector integrated nutrition forum organised by Lasoona, a non-government organisation. Officials of the health, agriculture, education, public health departments, NGOs and district administration participated in the function. The meeting was chaired by assistant commissioner Shahab Khan.

Mohammad Aurangzeb, manager food and nutrition security project, said malnutrition in Swat was a constant issue and needed proper attention from all the stakeholders.

`According to our survey, 58 per cent pregnant and breastfeeding women are victims of vitamin A and iron deficiency which is mainly because of vegetables deficiency in food.

Similarly, 46 per cent children under five years of age in the district are under malnutrition,` he said and added that pregnant women required one additional food while breastfeeding women required two additional foods.

Mr Aurangzeb said his organisation was actively working to minimise malnutrition and food deficiency in the district, for which they were not only raising awareness among general public but also working on iron and protein rich vegetables in collaboration with the agricul-ture department. Besides, he said vaccination and de-worming in children and organising trainings on nutrition awareness were being carried out.

The participants assured to work on the food and nutrition security in Swat district.

`The project team should involve agriculture department in each and every activity from planning to implementation of the project,` said Adalat Khan, an official of agriculture department.

He said proper amount should be allocated in the budget for food and security programme in the province.

Assistant commissioner Shahab Khan assured to work in coordination all the stakeholders to effectively implement the project. He said the nutrition markers in the provincial nutrition strategy suggested by secretary planning and development department must be strictly followed to eliminate malnutrition and food insecurity issues in the region.
