BAHAWALPUR: One person was killed and several others sustained injuries in incidents related to a windstorm that lashed the district late on Monday.
The 100 miles per hour windstorm followed by heavy rains uprooted signboards, billboards, trees and electricity and telephone poles injuring passersby and disrupting power supply to the city for hours.
Bahawal Victoria Hospital doctors rendered first aid to the injured.
A motorcyclist identified as Irshad died when a tree fell on him near Mubaral(pur, 35kms from Bahawalpur.
Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) employ-ees restored power supply after eight hours.
Mepco City Division Executive Engineer Khwaja Imtiaz told Dawn the company suffered heavy losses as its transmission lines had broken down. The damages were being assessed, he said.
He said still rural and urban areas were without electricity and efforts were being made to restore the supply.
SIALKOT: Widespread torrential rain followed by storm lashed the Sialkot region, adding miseries to wheat growers.
The rain began early on Tuesday which continued throughout the day intermittently inundating lowlying areas.
Earlier, heavy rains had badly affected standing wheat crops on more than 100,000 acres in Sialkot last week, Irrigation Department officials said.
Wheat farmers said kneedeep water was standing in fields.
PPP Daska President Raheel Kamran Cheema also expressed concern over the situation.
Talking to reporters, he showed solidarity with farmers and demanded that the government announce financial compensation for them.
