Kalat`s own interests

2023-04-08
LONDON: The London Times today [April 7] said that Kalat as a unit of Pakistan could hope for security and advancement. `Only steady pressure from Karachi could have induced the Khan of Kalat to forego his dreams of independence and accede to Pakistan,` the `Times` editorial said. `Since British rule in Baluchistan ended, he has been threatening to make trouble by asserting his sovereignty and demanding the return of the leased districts which control the vital Bolan Pass and the fortified zone of Quetta.

His own resources are not formidable, but his State borders on Iran and Afghanistan where there are plenty of people who would like to encourage him in his ambitions.

`Nearer home, the men who favour the dangerous movement for an independent `Pathanistan` have been watching Kalat eagerly. At the end of last month the Khan of Kalat yielded. ... Kalat cannot defend itself. It can only be a source of weakness to Pakistan by menacing the solidity of the Western defences, while as a unit of Pakistan it can hope to get security as well as advance.` News agencies
