KARACHI: Railway operations in Karachi were suspended with trains getting delayed by several hours when dismissed workers of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) staged a sit-in at the Pipri Railway Station at Bin Qasim on Monday.

The PSM workers were airing their grievance with the government and demanded the reinstatement of over 6,000 employees. They said that if their demands are not heard and fulfilled, they will also take to the streets and even block the highway.

Having completely blocked both tracks of the Pipri Railway Station, they have already brought to a halt all intercity train operations.

According to a Pakistan Railways spokesperson, Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi reached out to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to seek his cooperation regarding clearing of the main tracks.

The minister explained to the CM that railway operations have remained suspended for hours causing much inconvenience and frustration to passengers.

Later, the tracks were cleared after the protesting workers ended their sit-in. —Staff Reporter
