Pakistan, Uzbekistan vow to strengthen strategic partnership

ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani met President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the 150th InterParliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tashkent, reaffirming both nations` commitment to enhancing strategic ties.

A statement issued by the Senate here on Monday said that the meeting underscored the deep-rooted religious, cultural, and historical connections between the two countries. Yusuf Raza Gilani conveyed greetings from Pakistan`s leadership and lauded Uzbekistan`s successful hosting of the IPU Assembly and its recent parliamentary elections.

Discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, especially following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif`s February visit to Uzbekistan, where several MoUs were signed, and a HighLevel Strategic Cooperation Council was established.

The leaders reviewed progress in political, economic, and institutional engagements, including the revival of direct Lahore-Tashkent flights and increased business forums.

Highlighting the importance of interparliamentary collaboration, Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani called for the recon-stitution of Parliamentary Friendship Groups and deeper legislative exchanges. Both sides welcomed the growing trade volume, crossing $105 million in FY 2023-24 and set a target of $2 billion.

Visa facilitation was also discussed, with Gilani urging reciprocal easing of visa regimes following the diplomatic passport agreement.

Addressing the IPU Assembly, Mr Gilani emphasised the need for parliamentary action to advance social justice and development. He highlighted Pakistan`s reforms in social welfare, healthcare, and rights for women, youth, and marginalised communities.

He also condemned global silence on atrocities in Palestine and Kashmir.

`Let us legislate wisely and act together to build a future rooted in dignity, equity, and shared prosperity,` he said.
