26 MQM-L activists exonerated

HYDERABAD: The additional district judge-V of Hyderabad on Monday acquitted 26 Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London (MQM-L) activists for want of evidence in a case pertaining to their participation in a Yaum-iShuhada event on a call given by their London-based leader Altaf Hussain.

The case was registered at the Fort police station on the eve of the commemoration which was to be held on Dec 9, 2016.

The court recorded only one prosecution witness/complainant, Sikandar Mustafa, the then SHO of the Fort police station.

Additional District Public Prosecutor Irfan Memon wanted to produce more prosecution witnesses, including two investigating officers and a mushir.

However, the court exonerated all the accused, who included three sector in-charges and two joint sector incharges in the MQM-L organisational set up.

The case was registered under Sections 324, 153-A, 34, 148 and 149 PPC and 6/7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 vide FIR No. 60/16.

Some of the accused have already announced their decision to quit the MQM-L.
