Disturbances in Dacca

DACCA: Ten persons were 1(illed and several injured when Police opened fire on unruly mobs in Tejgaon and Narayanganj areas near Dacca this morning [June 7].

Violence erupted at these and other places in the city in the wake of the observance of `hartal` called by Awami League today.

The police intercepted the hooligans near Curzon Hall, Bahadurshah Park and Kawran Bazar and dispersed them by resorting to tear gas.

At Tejgaon, Chittagong Mail was stopped at the outer signal of Tejgaon Railway station and derailed.

The East Pakistan Government in a Press Note today said: `The hartal announced by the Awami League was organised by widespread interference with pedestrians and vehicular traffic from early dawn on 7.6.66.

Urchins and hooligans were let loose in groups in various parts of Dacca and Narayanganj.

EPRTC buses were stoned and all vehicular traffic brought to a standstill by deflating tyres.

Innocent members of the public and office-goers were subjected to humiliation and harassment.

Three cars were burnt in front of the High Court.

The Police intercepted the hooligans near Curzon Hall, Bahadurshah Park and Kawran Bazar and dispersed them by resorting to tear gas.

At Dacca University a section of the boys resorted to picketing and there was partial strike. The Dacca Hall was also attacked by some outsiders. Police and EP Rifles rushed there and brought the situation under control.

At noon workers from Adamjee, Siddhirganj and Demra proceeded towards Dacca in a procession violating orders under Section 144 Cr. P.C.

This procession was intercepted by an EPR contingent about two miles away from the City. In the af ternoon a train was detained by a mob near Gandaria.

In the evening an unruly mob attacked the Collectorate and, later on, the State Bank where the guards opened fire and dispersed the crowd.
