CII: of what use?
2016-06-08
APROPOS of the editorial, `CII: of what use?` (May 28), it rightly observes that the Council of Islamic Ideology has a peculiar fixation with all things women. Only recently, the council indicated that a wife is liable to be beaten `when needed`. The council should, at the same time, have given its opinion about men in the same situation.
The editorial observed that, `Parliament is already bound by the Constitution, to legislate in a manner that does not deviate from Islamic principles.` Thus, it is surely time that CII was done away with. As long as it exists, the Constitution will continue to be held hostage, in proxy, by `religious` elements, to the disadvantage of half of the citizens.
