Polio eradication

2016-06-08
THIS is apropos Abbas Nasir`s article `Enough said about jokers` (June 4). The writer begins with the quote: `Every nation gets the government it deserves,` by French philosopher Joseph de Maistre, which is so apt for Pakistan.

Remember, before we criticise our government and discuss its various failings, we should reflect upon our nation and observe the various failings of our people: lack of discipline, lack of unity, `me-first attitude` and so forth.

But there is a silver lining achievement attributable to our people this year, despite the negative mood prevailing all around.

The writer states that it was recently reported that all environmental samples for polio have been tested negative, which is a first in the country`s history.

The writer goes on to comment that although the negative environmental samples are `great news` for the country, this, however, doesn`t mean that polio has actually been eradicated. More persistent efforts are needed this year as well as the next two years to defeat the polio menace for good.

Iendorse his suggestion thatanational monument for polio martyrs should be erected on the Islamabad Highway for all to view when they visit the capital city.

Successfully dealing with a stubborn health enigma like polio is no mean achievementand those who fell in this line of duty nationwide truly deserve to be remembered lil(e officers and soldiers.
