LAHORE: Removal of brain tumour through eyebrow without skull surgery has started for the first time in the country at Lahore General Hospital.

Six operations had so far been conducted, while removal of the tumour through nose using endoscopy was also under way at the hospital.

A press release issued on Wednesday quoted head of neurosurgery unit II of Lahore General Hospital, Prof Khalid Mahmood, as saying this while talking to the media in connection with World Tumour Day to be observed today (Thursday).

He said Pakistan did not lag behind any developed country in the use of modern techniques to diagnose and operate upon patients of brain tumour. There were hundred types of brain tumours and only some developed into cancer. He said there was acute shortage of neurosurgeons in Pakistan and only 225 were available for a population of 200 million.

He further claimed that the facility of neurosurgery was available at almost all major government hospitals of the province.
