Inquiry ordered into killing of power protester

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Pervez Khattak on Wednesday ordered judicial inquiry into the May 29 Malakand Agency power riots in which one person was killed and 14 others got injuries in police fire.

Responding to a point of order before the budget speech in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, he directed payment of special compensation package to the legal heirs of the deceased. He said that police had already started inquiry in that regard.

Pakistan People`s Party Parliamentary Secretary Syed Mohammad Ali Shah Bacha took the floor on a point of order and highlighted the issue. He said that police opened fire on peaceful protesters who were agitating against unscheduled power loadshedding. The firing incident had occurred in Dargai area, where locals had blocked a road and reportedly attacked the offices of Peshawar Electric Supply Company. Levies personnel opened fire at the crowed which resulted into the death of a youngster. Angry mob ransacked offices of Pesco and a police station.

Shah Bacha said people across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, had been holding protest demonstrations against the power outages, led by MPAs and MNAs, and got the electricity supply restored by force.

The PPP leader said the police provided escorts to the protesters and did not stop them from taking over grid stations in any part of the province except Malakand where Levies used force and opened fire. He demanded judicial inquiry to fix responsibility.

He asked the government to pay Rs2 million compensation to the family of the deceased.
