Bad blood leads to student`s killing

BAHAWALPUR: A matric student was killed and two other persons were injured when six armed motorcyclists opened fire on them near the Government Boys School of Basti Sahlan on Tuesday.

The family and relatives of the deceased staged a sit-in against police by placing the body at DPO Chowk. They demanded arrest of the assailants who, they alleged, had political backing.

According to Saddar SHO Muhammad Afzal, both groups had an old enmity and were engaged in litigation. Six men, four of them belonging to Channar clan, opened fire on Muhammad Tariq Khokhar and his companions who were at Basti Chowk at that time.

Police handed over the body to family after postmortem at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital. The SHO said raids were conducted at various places for the arrest of the suspects.

Talking to Dawn, he denied any influential person had contacted him to save the perpetrators.

RAIN: The city and suburbs were hit by heavy rain which submerged the low-lying areas, exposing the flawed drainage and sewerage system and causing power breakdown on Tuesday.

This is the second downpour within a fortnight in the city where extensive damage has been done.

Motorists too faced inconvenience as pumping sets and other machines were placed on roads by the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) at various places to drain out rainwater.

District Coordination Officer Imran Sikandar Baloch deployed a special squad of the city TMA sanitary workers to drain out the water from the railway underpass on Yazman Road.

The breakdown of Mepco system at its two grid stations caused disruption of electricity for several hours.
