Low-level flood in Chenab; govt depts on high alert

SIA LKOT: There was a low-level flood in the Chenab at Head Marala on Tuesday.
District Officer Coordination Malik Abid Awan said the flow of floodwater in the Chenab was between 95,000 to 100,000 cusecs at Head Marala. He also said floodwater level was soaring due to the ongoing fresh spell of torrential monsoon rains in the region and in all catchment areas in neighbouring held Kashmir. He saidalthough there was a low-level flood in the Chenab, the situation was under control.
Awan further said the district administration had issued flood warning, putting all the departments concerned on high alert besides round-the-clock monitoring of the flood situation in Chenab, Tavi and Jammu rivers and the seasonal nullahs Dek, Aik, Palkhu and Bhed.
Meanwhile, according to the senior district administration officials, Gujranwala division`s Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Gujranwaladistricts had been divided in 79 sectors under the flood combating plan. Flood control officers had also been deputed at special control rooms established in these sectors.
The senior officials feared 1,000 villages in the division would be affected by the expected flash floods this year. The government was formulating district-level Flood Disaster Management Committees in these districts, besides appointing focal persons at tehsil level for 24-hour vigilance in the coming days.The government has established nine flood sectors in Gujranwala district, 16 in Gujrat, 19 in Sialkot, 17 in Narowal and nine each in Hafizabad and Mandi Bahauddin districts. Around 96 relief camps were also being established for any flood affectees in these districts.
The divisional administration has got 739 tents, 147 official jeeps, 84 ambulances, 46 water tanks, 121 tractors, 102 trolleys, 31 boats, 27 boat engines, 145 dewatering set s, seven bulldozers and four cranes to combat floods.
