Sharif rails against inclusion of intelligence men in JIT

ISLAMABAD: Breaking his silence over the proceedings of the Panama Papers case, ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif has criticised the inclusion of InterServices Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) of ficials in the joint investigation team (JIT) that probed money laundering charges against his f amily.Talking to TV anchorpersons and editors at Punjab House on Monday, Mr Sharif alleged that his rivals were made members of the JIT.

`Never before of ficials from the MI and ISI were included in an inquiry,` he said, adding that suchinquiries had no worth.

`Those who receive millions of votes are sent home by five noble persons,` he rem arked.

In reply to a question about the ruling party`s possible candidate in the by-election for his NationalAssembly seat NA-120 from Lahore, Mr Sharif said it had `more or less` been decided that his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif would stay in Punjab as chief minister.

He said Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi would complete the projects initiated by the PML-N government in the past four years.

Responding to a question about criticism of his planned procession from Islamabad to Lahore, the former prime minister said he was not launching any protest and was simply travelling back to his home.

`I am not coming out for my restoration. It is only a journey back home.` According to sources, when his attention was drawn towards security threats to his planned rallies on GT Road, Mr Sharif said `risks are needed to be taken for the country` and added thathewasdoingitfora`greatercause`.

The former prime minister also expressing his disappointment over the Supreme Court`s decision that a senior judge would oversee the filing of the references against his f amily by the National Accountability Bureau and their proceedings, saying that in this way he would not be able to file an appeal against NAB`s wrongdoings.

Mr Sharif said he had not committed any corruption during his tenure in the government and had been disqualifiedon a minor issue when nothing was found against him in the Panama Papers case. He said even the judges had made observations that there were no allegations of corruption or misuse of authority against him.

He also expressed his displeasure over certain remarks passed by the judges during the proceedings of the case. He said he was hurt by the remarks of `Sicilian mafia` and `godfather`. He said that one of the judges had even stated that `the prime minister should know that there is a lot of space available in Adiyala Jail`.

Mr Sharif said he would not run awaylike the military dictator retired Gen Pervez Musharraf.

The former prime minister had returned to Islamabad on Saturdaymorning from Murree where he had gone with his family after vacating the PM House on July 30, following his disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.

The PML-N has announced that Mr Sharif will travel to Lahore via the centuries-old GT Road on Wednesday.

Mr Sharif also met a delegation of lawyers and received leaders and members of his party.

The sources said Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal briefed him about the plan for the travel to Lahore. They said the minister had informed him that the security agencies had not yet issued a clearance to the party in this regard.

In the evening, the Punjab chief minister also arrived in the capital and met his elder brother.
