CM opens anti-smog pilot project

LAHORE: Chief Minister Parvez Elahi on Wednesday inaugurated a pilot project of the Environment Protection Department`s anti-smogsquad.

The squad will comprise officials from the traffic police, transport and environmental protection departments.

The EPD secretary briefed about the working of the squad and the process of checking the vehicular smoke.

The CM said the antismog squad would regularly check vehicles emitting smoke in the city and action would be taken against the vehicles emitting smoke beyond the prescribed limit. He directed the anti-smog squad should also ensure checking of vehicles at the entry points of the city.

Punjab Minister for Environment and Parliamentary Affairs Basharat Raja, EPD DG and others were present on the occasion.

BRITISH HC: British High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner called on Chief Minister Parvez Elahi at the chief minister`s office and discussed matters of mutual interest.

The meeting agreed that Punjab and the UK would promote cooperation in various fields including health and tech-nical education.

The British high commissioner expressed his regret over the loss of life and property due to floods and vowed to continue cooperating with the Punjab government in educadon, health and other sectors.

The chief minister appreciated the UK`s contribution to helping the flood victims.

`The provincial government values British cooperation for improvement in peace and security and social sectors,` he said and expressed his desire to expand bilateral relations in dif ferent fields.

He said the government would extend the ongoing reforms programme initiated with British cooperation in dif ferent sectors.

The chief minister said a plan was devised to secure rainwater in the mountainous area of Kohi-Sulaiman in 2002 but the succeeding government did not do any work on this project. Now, the government was going to restart this scheme and hoped this beneficial project would help deal with the situation caused by rains in Koh-i-Sulaiman.
