Nazims ask govt to frame rules in 10 days

CHARSADDA: The opposition members of the district council on Wednesday set a 10-day deadline for the PTI-led provincial government to frame rules of business and other by-laws for the local governments or they would launch a protest movement and tender resignations.

Addressing a hurriedly called press conference at the ANP district office here, the district councillors belonging to ANP and JUI-F said they were confused and had no direction that how to carry on their functions despite assuming offices a month ago as the provincial government had failed to approve rules of business and other by-laws for the district, tehsil and village, neigh-bourhood councillors.

The joint press conference was attended by opposition leader in Charsadda district council Qasim Ali Khan Muhammadzai, deputy opposition leader Maulana Noorul Amin, council members Mian Saleem Shah, Haji Hidayatulla Khan, Attaullah Khan, Haroon Khan Wardaga, Abdur Rehman Khan, Ajmal Khan, Ghazan Khan, Asghar Abass, Amir Khan and others.

They alleged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government Act, 2013, had been passed way before the local government elections but the government had yet to fame rules of business to streamline the functioning of the local governments.

Despite the lapsing of four months ofholding the LG polls, the KP government has failed to release development funds to the districts to start uplift works.

The LG representatives said voters sought development works after the LG elections but the councillors and nazims had no answer for their demands.

The councillorsallegeditlooked thatthe PTI government had apparently changed its mind regarding the devolution of powers to grass roots level after its failure to sweep LG polls in the province. They said the government wanted to clip powers of opposition nazims and councillors through the proposed rules of business and other bylaws.

They regretted that the provincial departments, including Pesco, health, education and others, were not cooperatingwith them to resolve people`s problems.

TEHSIL BUDGET APPROVED: Tehsil council Charsadda on Wednesday unanimously approved its maiden budget worth Rs163 million for the financial year 201516.

Charsadda tehsil council nazim Khalil Bashir Khan Umerzai presented the budget for expenditure against its revenue of Rs142 million. In the first financial year, the tehsil administration would face deficit of Rs20 million.

For the honorarium of tehsil nazim and naib nazim Rs0.8 million was reflected in the budget while Rs3.7 million were set aside for the fire brigade staff, Rs1 million for streetlights, Rs3 million for women welfare programme, and Rs20 million for pension of the retired employees.
