`Contaminated water posing serious threats`

2014-11-08
LAHORE: Governor Chaudhry Sarwar has said the contaminated drinking water is posing serious threats.

Addressing the 31st conference of the Pakistan Medical Association on Friday, he said more than 50 per cent of the total patients were facing multiple diseases due to the contaminated water.

He said the Punjab government had installed many filtration plants using funds of billions of rupees but unfortunately these facilities brought no fruit so far.

`I believe these plants were either faulty or have no capacity to purify the water,` Chaudhry Sarwar said, adding the Punjab government should probe it in the larger interest of the poor masses. He said medicines were not sold in European counties without the prescription of a doctor. However, the situation was disturbing in Pakistan due to a lack of awareness and rules and regulations.

He stressed the need for formulating regulations for the sale and purchase of life saving drugs on prescriptions only.

PMA office bearers, including Dr Ashraf Nizami and Dr Tanvir Ahmad, also spoke on the occasion besides adviser to chief minister on health Khwaja Salman Rafique. Staff Reporter
