Escape of accused Three cops booked for `negligence`

B A H A W A L P U R : Cantonment police on Friday registered a case against three policemen, including a sub-inspector (SI), after the escape of an accused from Head Rajkan police station.

According to police sources, Muhammad Ramzan was arrested in a case under Section 506 of the PPC for allegedly hurling threats at his rivals.

Later, he was found to have escaped.

On the orders of the district police officer (DPO), Cantonment police registered a case against SI Shabbir Ahmad and constables Shehzad and Shahid.

Further investigation against the accused was under way and police could not confirm their arrest so far.

Meanwhile, DPO Sarfaraz Ahmed Falki claimed the reports of a robbery on Thursday in a passenger bus near Yazman on Fort Abbas Road proved to be hoax and Shehbaz Rajput, who had reported the incident, was arrested by Yazman police and a case was registered against him on Friday.

PETITION: An election tribunal headed by retired district and sessions judge Chaudhry Abdul Hafeez on Friday dismissed an election petition of PMLN`s Ahmed Alam Anwar.

Anwar had challengedthe election of PPP MNA Khwaja Ghulam Rasool alias Qutub Farid Koreeja from NA-192 (Liaquatpur tehsil of Rahim Yar Khan district).

Dawn learnt the petition was heard for 18 months and there were about 50 adjournments during the hearing. On the request of the petitioner, polled votes had been recounted by a commission led by retired District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Mushtaq Ahmed for which the petitioner had paid Rs300,000.

Later, during one of the hearings on the request of the respondent`s counsel, the presiding officers (POs) were also summoned, who amongst them selected eight POs and recorded their evidence along with relevant records of the election. At one point, some supporters of the petitioner had claimed he was leading the recount.

According to petitioner`s counsel Mian Faizul Hasan, the tribunal held that the report of the recount was not reliable and the returning officer and district returning of ficer not found involved.
