Pakistan look to keep ODI series alive against Australia

2024-11-08
ADELAIDE: Pakistan face a do-or-die situation as the Greenshirts take on world champions Australia in the second Oneday International here at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Pakistan suffered a narrow two-wicket loss in the opening ODI of the three-game series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday while defending a modest 203 after being put in to bat first.According to a report of Press Trust of India news agency, a source close to the Pakistan team said the Mohammad Rizwan-led tourists are likely to field an unchanged playing XI for the Adelaide game.

There had been some discussion on handing debut to leftarm wrist spinner Faisal Akram on Friday but the pitch appeared to be more encouraging for pacers, the source added.

`The likelihood is that Pakistan will field the same eleven that lost the first match.

The same combination of fourpace bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah, who has been cleared to play after a slight strain in the first match forced him off the field, the source said.

Pakistan, the source further said, would look to depend on their part-time spinners, Agha Salman, Saim Ayub and Kamran Ghulam, who were not called upon to bowl in the opening ODI, which Australia won with almost 17 overs to spare.

Openers Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub will get another chance to open the innings, with all eyes on star batter Babar Azam, who has been struggling for form. He was dismissed for 37 in Melbourne.

`There has been talk about trying out all-rounder Aamer Jamal in place of Mohammad Hasnain, but the members of the team management, including interim head coach Jason Gillespie, feel it would be unfair to drop Hasnain after just one game as he was playing in an international after more than ayear.

Pakistan hold a dismal record against Australia in Adelaide where the touristshave won only once in eight ODIs. The Green-shirts, who have lost 12 times to Australia in their last 14 ODI meetings, will certainly need to raise their game significantly in Adelaide to keep the series alive.

Naseem said on Thursday that Pakistan were confident of making a strong comeback in the second ODI.

Speaking about the preparations for Friday`s clash, rightarmer Naseem said the team discussed their shortcomings during the first ODI in detail and would look to make their best effort to level the series.

`We were very close to recording a win [in Melbourne].

However, teams learn from [the mistakes made in] close games like this one,` Naseem said while talking to reporters at the Adelaide Oval where the Pakistan team attended a practice session.

`The entire team sat down and discussed ways to improve for upcoming matches. We analysed our batting mistakes and aimed to improve them. Our bowling effort was fantastic, and we plan to enhance it further,` the pacer added.

`We will try to rectify themistakes [of the first game] and play our best cricket in the next match.

The fast bowler also downplayed the rumours about his injury, saying he was completely fit for Friday`s game.

Naseem couldn`t complete his 10-over quota and had to leave the field two balls into his eighth over during the first ODI, casting doubt on his availability for the remaining games of the series Down Under.

The pacer, however, said that it was just a cramp and that he had recovered from it.

`Alhamdulillah, I am completely fine. Cramps are common among athletes; they can happen to anyone, whether a batter or a bowler, regardless of their fitness level,` he added.

Perth will host the third ODI on Sunday.
