THE chief justice of Pakistan in a recent speech has said the judiciary would not become a part to any plan. This statement came in the wake of mounting criticism by the ruling and some other parties.
Thatisencouraging, onthe one hand, but confusing, on the other. What I have been unable to f athom is the need for making such a statement by no one elsebut the chief justice himself.
It seemingly is a borderline apologetic statement. The judiciary should be bold enough to stand by its judgements come what may. Had the Supreme Court taken a note of the contemptuous statements by leading politicians ab initio, this need to issue clarifications would not have arisen.
By not taking action the judiciary emboldened them. The situation is likely to get uglier, unless the courts take action.
