GUJRAT: The city police have issued a statement to clarify that a former Punjab finance minister and senior PPP leader Tanvir Ashraf Kaira is not a suspect in the case of dishonouring of a cheque.
It said a case was actually registered under Section 489 (F) of the Pakistan Penal Code against a man named Muhammad Afzal.
Mr Afzal had signed the cheque which had bounced twice.
City circle`s DSP Irfanul Haq Sulehria while talking to Dawn said main accused Afzal had been the manager of Mr Kaira`s Lalamusa-based plywood factory `National Wood Industrial Enterprises` that had some monetary issue with complainant Azhar Iqbal of Lahore.
He said the police hadtried to arrest manager Afzal on Tuesday but was told that the monetary dispute had been settled after the payment of the outstanding amount of Rs1.35 million.
According to the FIR number 34/17 of Lorry Adda police dated Feb 4, 2017, the complainant alleged that he had ordered to purchase some household products from the factory`s office in Lahore`s Defence Housing Authority in November 2014 and paid a sum of Rs1.35 million. However, he said, the consignment was never delivered to him and the company`s DHA office was also closed.
Eventually, he contacted the company`s Lalamusa head office and was handed a cheque of Rs1.35 million in September 2016 which was twice dishonoured in October and December 2016.
