Man held for throwing acid on wife

SIALKOT: Hajipura police arrested a suspect for allegedly throwing acid on his wife over suspicion in the congested Shahabpura locality late on Tuesday.

Complainant Muhammad Ramzan told Dawn at the Hajipura police station that his niece Saira Bibi and suspect Muhammad Zeeshan had contracted love marriage about 10 years ago and were parents to four minor daughters.

He said Zeeshan quarrelled with Saira and threw acid on her over suspicion regarding her character. Zeeshan would often torture her as well, the uncle added. Zeeshan threw acid on Saira`s face, head, chest and other parts, due to which she lost her right eye while her face, head and chest were completely burnt, he further claimed.

She had been shifted to the Mayo Hospital in Lahore from a local hospital, as Sialkot lacked a burns unit in any of its hospitals. Local doctors said Saira`s condition was critical.

District Police Officer(DPO) Dr Abid Khan told Dawn that Hajipura police had arrested Zeeshan and registered a case under Section 336-B against him on the report of Ramzan.

DIES: A minor girl whose father tried to drown her around 10 days ago and who was under treatment in a critical condition at the Mayo Hospit al died on Wednesday.

Police handed over her body to the family after autopsy.

Eleven-year-old Zainab Amjad was buried in her native graveyard at Dinpura, Shakargarh.

Late on Jan 27, Amjad had attempted to drown hisdaughtersinaseasonal nullah near Dinpura. His eight-year-old daughter Mariyam had died on the spot, while Zainab was saved by locals and shifted to the Mayo Hospital from Shakargarh THQ Civil Hospitalinacriticalcondition.

Shakargarh City SHO Sub-Inspector Shoaib Kamran had told Dawn that police had arrested Amjad, a vendor by profession, whom he claimed was `mentally unstable` The SHO said the magisterial court had sent Amjad to district jail on a two-week judicial remand.
