PMA demands strict action Expressing concern over the increase in traffic accidents in the city in recent weeks, which have resultedintheloss ofprecious lives and misery for countless citizens, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has called upon the government to strictly enforce traffic laws and take decisive action against offenders.

`The association notes with grave concern that such incidents have become a routine occurrence. The apparent lack of effective measures to prevent these tragedies is deeply troubling,` the association stated.

Refering to a recent case in which a dumper truck claimed citizens` lives, the association noted that the incident served as a stark reminder of the alarming frequency of such accidents in the city and that the primary cause of these accidents was the blatant disregard for traffic laws and regulations, particularly by drivers of heavy vehicles.

`The complete failure of the traffic police to enforce the law further exacerbates the situation.

Instead of focussing on implementing tr affic laws, the traffic police are often perceived to be more interested in extorting money from citizens,` the association stated.

The association demanded increased vigilance, accountability and public awareness regarding road and driving safety.

`The traffic police must increase their presence on the roads and ensure that all vehicles, especially heavy vehicles, adhere to traffic rules and regulations,` the association asserted.

`Overloading, speeding and reckless driving must be dealt with using the full force of the law. The traffic police must be held accountable for their failure to enforce traffic laws. In addition, the government should launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about traffic rules and safety measures,` it stated.
