LAHORE: The Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA) has foiled a bid to smuggle a huge cache of illegal arms and ammunition worth over Rs60 million to various parts of Punjab and arrested four suspects.
Senior Superintendent of Police Abdul Rab, who oversees investigation in Lahore, told the media on Saturday the weapons were being transported in a double-cabin mini-truck from Kohat and Mardan to Lahore. Police intercepted the smugglers at the Thokar Niaz Beg checkpost, he added.
He said the ammunition was packed inside parts of the vehicle being used by the suspects, later identified as Fazalur Rehman and Hasan Khan.
During the course of interrogation, he said, it was revealed that hardened criminals would smuggle weapons from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the underworld in Punjab, mainly Lahore.
He said on the basis of information extracted from the arrested suspects, police also took into custody their two accomplices.
`We are expecting developments in this case and share it with the media at a later stage,` the SSP said.
He said the weapons seized from the suspects included 98 guns and pistols, besides around 80,000 bullets and magazines.
