PESHAWAR: An elderly labourer was killed and his son received serious injuries when a group of robbers opened firing on them in Wazir Kallay area on the outskirts of Peshawar on Wednesday.
The villagers staged a protest against the incident and placed the body of the victim on Ring Road which caused suspension of traffic for about two hours.
The protesters also burnt old tyres on the road and shouted slogans against police for their failure to protect people.
The blockade of road also caused severe hardships to the motorists as the entire traffic was diverted.
Talking to journalists on the occasion, Jahangir said that he along with his brother Amir Khan was going in an auto-rickshaw to their workplace when three robbers snatched Rs2,500 and two mobile phone sets from them at gunpoint.
He said that his uncle Nazeef Khan chased the robbers along with his son Munir Khan when he came to know about the incident.The robbers fired at them and both Nazeef and his son sustained bullet injuries, he said.
He added that they were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital where Nazeef succumbed to his wounds.
However, Paharipura police avoided giving details of the incident, saying that a man identified as Shalil was killed by unidentified armed men when he came out of his residence for morning prayers. The victim, they said, belonged to Waziristan Agency.
Police did not have information about involvement of robbers in the case, they added.
The local people got infuriated over the incident and took out a procession against police.
They said street crimes had increased manifold in the area but police were unable to control the deteriorating situation.
However, the protesters dispersed peacefully after assurance by the police officials that the persons involved in the incident would be arrested soon.
Meanwhile, counter terrorism department arrested a suspected terrorist during a raid near Custom Chowk and recovered explosive material from his possession here on Wednesday.
Sources said that the arrested man was identified as Shah Hussain, who was associated with militant group Lashkar-i-Islam.
He was involved in the bomb attack on police public school Peshawar in 2010, they said.
