Three more bodies recovered from Swabi canal

SWABI: The death toll from an overloaded rickshaw plunging into the Gohai Canal here the other day rose to six as three more bodies were fished out on Tuesday.

Awais Babar, Rescue 1122 district emergency officer, said that they resumed search for the recovery of the bodies of a woman and her son on Tuesday, but soon they were informed by the family members that a baby girl was also missing, who was earlier assumed to be with her mother, who was rescued on Monday. The minor’s body was also fished out.

The official said that 15 members of a family were travelling in a rickshaw when it fell into the canal on Monday.

The rescue official identified the deceased as Noreena Begum, 60, her daughter Nasira Bibi, 30, nephew Mohammad Bilal, 11, two-year-old Bisma Khan, her daughter-in-law Tanzeela, 24, and her three-year-old son, Tawheed Khan.

Separately, a man and a seven-year-old child were killed when rival groups exchanged fire in Swabi city, the police said on Tuesday.

They said the cause of the incident was an old enmity.

Filing an FIR in Swabi city police station, Mohammad Iqbal said he along with his cousins, Sirajur Rehman, Shakeelur Rehman and nephew, Afaq Ahmed was standing outside a car bargain centre in Aurangabad area. In the meantime, he said accused Shakeel Khan and Moosa Khan came there on a motorcycle and started firing at them. He added as a result of firing, Shakeel was killed on the spot, while they narrowly escaped.

A seven-year-old child, Ahmed Khan, who was passing by the area, was also killed.

Meanwhile, a man allegedly shot dead his mother in Dagai village over a money dispute.

SHO Kalu Khan police station Munsif Khan said the accused, Bihar Ali, had been arrested.

The police registered an FIR and started investigation.
