Elections for district bars held peacefully

PESHAWAR: The annual elections of district and tehsil bar associations were held peacefully across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday.

In Peshawar, around 3,000 lawyers exercised their right to vote in the Peshawar Bar Association polls.

Counting was under way until the last reports came in.

A joint panel of Malgaray Wakeelan (Awami National Party) and Insaf Lawyers Forum (PTI) faced a panel from multiple parties, including Jamiat Lawyers Forum, Muslim League Lawyers Forum, Islamic Lawyers Forum (Jamaat-iIslami), Frontier Lawyers Forum, Muslim League-Q Lawyers Forum, Watan Pal Lawyers Forum, and others.

Qaiser Zaman Khan of Malgaray Wakeelan was challenged by Maulana Shamsul Haq of Jamiat Lawyers Forum for the president`s post.

Meanwhile, senior lawyer Shahjehan Khan Swati was elected president of the Mansehra District Bar Association for the fifth time on Tuesday.

Polling was held peacefully.

Shahjehan Khan Swati secured 304 votes, defeating his rival, Fahad Habib Tanoli, who received 272 votes. Mohammad Shafique Awan was elected vice president with 338 votes, while his opponent secured 224.

Mohammad Qasim Jehangiri won general secretary`s postwith 311 votes, defeating Majid Khan, who received 250.

In Torghar, the district bar association elections were held in Oghi, where Alamzeb Khan Tanoli was elected as president with 22 votes, while his rival Qamar Farooq secured 15.

Irfan Ali was elected general secretary with 23 votes, defeating Amir Sarwar, who got 13.

In Haripur, Asad Saeed Khan was elected president of the district bar association for the third consecutive term in the annual elections.

He got 335 votes and his rival, Yasir Rehman, 250.

The office of general secretary went to Rabnawaz with 246 votes.

Ishaq Battgrami, Asma Mir and Nageebullah Babar returned unopposed as vice president, joint secretary and library secretary respectively.

In Khyber tribal district, Ibrar Afridi was elected president and Sajjad Hussain general secretary of the bar association on Tuesday.

The voting was held in Jamrud.

For the first time, a female bar member, Eram Burhan, exercised her right to vote and was also elected the press secretary of the association.

Other elected office-bearers included Gul Jahan the joint secretary, Mohammad Afaq finance secretary and Qadeer Khan and Zuhaib Khan executive members.

In Lower Dir, a panel supported by Jamaat-i-Islami, PTI and Pakistan Peoples Party won district bar association elections held in Timergara, defeating candidates jointly backed by JUI-F, PML-N and ANP.

Saleem Khan was elected the president, Zakir Khan general secretary, Mohammad Karim vice president, Mohammad Bilal joint secretary, Qazi Ghiyas finance secretary, GoharRehman librarian and Wajid Ali the executive member.

The elections were held peacefully at the district bar room in Balambat under the supervision of election commissioner Asfandyar.

In elections for Lower Chitral district bar association, Mominur Rehman emerged victorious by a margin of only two votes against his rival Sajidullah.

For the slot of the president, Mominur Rehman polled 28 votes, Sajidullah 26 and Raza Ali 15, while for the office of finance secretary, Saleem Sarwar got 44 votes against 25 votes of Jahanzeb advocate.

The office-bearers elected unopposed included Waqas Ahmad vice-president, Sajid Zafar Baig general secretary, Faisal Kamal general secretary, Zafarul Haq library secretary and Rizwanullah, Sardar Ali, Nabek and Rahat Ali members of executive committee.

Also, the majority of Awani National Party-affiliated candidates were elected the president and members of the Swabi Bar Association on Tuesday.

Tayyab Zaman and Safdar Zeb Khan of Malgaray Wakilan grabbed the offices of the president and general secretary respectively.

Also in the day, Rashid Ahmad Mohmand was elected president and Bashir Ahmad Safi the general secretary in the Mohmand district bar elections.

Other office-bearers included Hamid Khan the vice president, Abuzar Khan joint secretary and Suleman Mohmand finance secretary.

In Bajaur, Zahid Khan was elected the district bar association`s president and Hayay Khan the general secretary.

Also, Zahid Khan, Haya Khan, Mirza Hussain, MohammadNoor, Gohar Ali Khan, Ziaur Rahman and Amanullah were declared the vice president, joint secretary, information secretary, finance secretary and librarian respectively.

In Battagram, Rasool Khan of Malgaray Wakeelan Panel was elected the president with 28 votes with his rival, Syed Gul Badshah, bagging 27 votes.

Mushtaq Mohammad Khan grabbed the slot of general secretary with 34 votes, defeating his opponent Syed Nasir Shah (23 votes).

Senior PPP leader and divisional president Qaizar Khan Miankhel advocate was elected the president of Dera Ismail Khan district bar association by securing 331 votes against 166 votes bagged by his PTI-backed rival, Rana Nadeem.

The general secretary`s position went to Adnan Saeed Sadozai of the PPP with 333 votes, with 149 votes going to PTI`s Abid.

Other elected office-bearers included Mohammad Usman Ali the vice president, Khizar Hayat joint secretary and Shoaib Ahmad Khan library secretary.

Also in the day, Mujeebur Rehman was elected the president of the Charsadda district bar association and Jawad Ahmad the general secretary, while Shakil Ahmad grabbed the vice president`s office.

Rehman got 129 votes, while his rival Abdur Rehman Khan secured 89 votes.

Ahmad polled 147 votes against 72 votes bagged by Saifullah Khan, while Shakil Ahmad received 96 votes against his opponent Mohammad Shafig`s 65 votes.

Amjad Ali was elected the press secretary, Mohammad Fawad joint secretary and Umair Ali librarian.
