LONDON: In continuation of his review of the British and U.S. Treasury`s plans, Reuter`s city correspondent says that both Keyne`s and the U.S. Treasury`s plan to accept gold as the ultimate substance of international value as in effect the `cash` in the international banking system. Under both plans nations can get international credit by paying in gold and the international body may pay out gold to reduce surplus nations` credit balances. The gold link is much more direct and more rigid in the United States than the British plan. So city merchant bankers believe this is a fundamental incompatibility between the two plans, arguing that the logical conclusion of the British plan is that physical gold would become unnecessary in the end.

Even these critics however agree that the early, as distinct from the ultimate effect of either plan must be the strengthening of gold`s position.
