RAWALPINDI: One of the policemen, involved in the shooting of two brothers on 6th Road was arrested on Monday, while another is still at large.
A senior police official, requesting anonymity, told Dawn that local police conducted raids to arrest two policemen, Altaf Zubair from Gujar Khan and Mohammad Umair from Kallar Syedan.
Altaf Zubair was arrested and gave his statement to the police, in which he alleged that it was Mohammad Umair who shot at the young men.
The official said police had already arrested two policemen, Mohammad Sharif and Mohammad Zaheer, and initial inquiry revealed a lapse of judgment on the part of the policemen.
He said the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, on Monday, held a video-conference with Regional Police Officer and City Police Ofñcerandexpressed displeasure overthe performance of the police.
`The chief minister asked the officers to submit daily reports on the case and ordered them to ensure that police of ficials improve their attitude, especially at the temporary checkposts set up at various places,` he said. When contacted, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja admitted that the policemen should not have shot at the two men and said an inquiry was still underway.
However, he said that three of the policemen have been arrested while the fourth will also be arrested soon.
`The tragic incident has brought a bad name to the police force,` he said.
The RPO said an initial report had been dispatched to Lahore and daily updates will be sent to the Inspector General of Punjab Police.
Meanwhile, speaking at a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Law and Order through video link, the chief minister said that there was no justification for police at a picket to shoot directly at someone, even if they do not stop.
`The killing of the two brothers by police is a brutal, inhumane act,` he said.
He said that although the two men could not be brought back, justice would be given to the aggrieved family.
The chief minister said a home has been destroyed in Rawalpindi by the police. `Who will answer the questions of the mother and the sisters of the victims,` he said.
Shahbaz Sharif reprimanded the officials present and questioned senior police officials about whether policemen are trained to handle such a situation.
`The RPO and DPO Rawalpindi have not been training their of ficers well,` he said.
He said the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order should pay attention to the basic training of police and put together a comprehensive plan to prevent such incidents in the future.
