Charter of economy`

2017-06-09
THIS is apropos the article, `Charter of the economy` (June 7). According to the writer, the charter of economy `is not good for the nation`. He tried to justify his argument by saying that similar economic targets would lead to common electoral manifestos. Thus political parties might lose their distinctions.

However, this is not going to happen.

First, the charter of economy is the need ofthe hour. There should be a consensus on certain objectivesin order to catapult the economy.

These objectives include widening the tax net to reach a 10pc tax-to-GDP ratio in the next 10 years; reform or privatise public sectors; prioritise human development by increasing one per cent of GDP every year until it reaches 10pc on social sectors, particularly health and education; adopt austerity measures; ensure accountability;strengthen financial institutions (FBR, NAB) and reform the style of governance.

Second, political parties will orchestrate different schemes and plans to achieve these targets. Thus, their manifestos will be different. So the pace of economic development will continue no matter which party wins.
