THIS refers to news regarding the sale of expired items by restaurants and hotels in Peshawar (July 26). Snooping on big hotels and restaurant is a wonderful beginning but remember unless small eateries, which sell highly contaminated food to the public, are also checked and sealed, the common man will continue to suffer.
Another field that needs serious attention is the sale of meat. Nowhere in the world is slaughtered meat transported from butcheries to points ofsalein openvans with flies, smoke, dust, splashes of contaminated slush, heat and other viruses allowed to collect on them during transportation.
I feel deputy commissioners need to look into and address this most unhygienic procedure andEnd a solution.
One suggestion would be for the government to induct chilling trucks that carry the meat to outlets. This can be done by charging a nominal sum to the butcheries and outlets that sell meat, ensuring that this nominal sum is not passed on to the public.
For this, the government will have to sit with the cattle breeders and meat-sellers and thrash out a price for the type of cattle that is sold and publish a price list for the retailers.
Those not adhering to the price list must be fined and warned.
If an offence is commited for the third time, the retail shop must be sealed.
