NEW DELHI: Official confirmation was available here today [Aug 6] of the report that Sir George Cunningham, Governor of the NorthWest Frontier Province in 1947 had given a warning to Gen Sir Rob Lockhart, the former Indian Commander-in-Chief, that tribesmen from the Frontier were going to infiltrate Kashmir. Sir George had said that the members of the Frontier Government were actively helping in this and had doubted whether he could stop it. A Press note issued by the Indian External Affairs Ministry tonight denies that Sir Rob Lockhart had kept this letter a secret and says he had actually communicated its contents to a number of high-ranking military officers. The information contained in the letter, the press note adds, was the first authoritative intimation of impending trouble in Kashmir. The influential Afghan national paper, Anis, and the official organ, Islah, published in Kabul have editorially condemned the bombing and warned Pakistan of its repercussions. News agencies
