Five trapped in rubble of adjacent buildingLAHORE, Sept 8: Five family members were trapped in the debris after a two-storey empty building collapsed and its remains fell onto an opposite house in Bhatti Gate area early on Sunday.

However, no casualty or injury was reported in the incident.

Police said Shaukat Ali and his family were present at home when the remains of the dilapidated building fell onto their house. His neighbours launched rescue efforts and managed to pull five people out of the debris.

Locals gathered at a near-by chowk and lodged a protest against the city district government for not demolishing the structure, which had been empty for the last 10 years or so.

Witnesses told the media that the locals rescued the family on their own. They said applications were repeatedly submitted to the town administration to demolish dangerous structure but to no avail.

Although most of the districts have ensured good performance, there are some district officers who have given poor results. And now disciplinary action against all such officers has been initiated after due process.

This was stated by Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) Director-General Dr Rizwan Naseer while addressing the participants of an international course on `Collapsed Structure: Search & Rescue` at Emergency Services Academy on Sunday.

He said: `Rescue 1122 has provided a sense of safety to citizens by rescuing over two million victims of emergencies without discrimination of socio-economic status and maintaining an average response time of seven minutes across the province.

He said there was no room for compromise in an emergency service and stern action shall be taken against any district emergency officer or rescue officials showing poor performance.

The DG hoped that the knowledge they were gaining from this international CSSR course would be passed on and they would train the rescuers in their respective districts so that the uniform standard of emergency service could be maintained in all districts.
