KARACHI: Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra has said that a fumigation campaign in the city is being launched and every district will be given 50 vehicles to carry out the spray in their respective areas.
Briefing media persons at a ceremony, organised to hand over the vehicles to District Municipal Corporation-West officials on University Road on Saturday, he said in the first phase vehicles were being handing over to the DMCWest so that it could start the fumigation drive in its 31 union councils instantly.
He said that every DMC in the city would be given spray vehicles along with fuel and insecticide and staffers to carry out the spray in its area. He said that the DMC and UC officials concerned would be responsible for carrying out the campaign in their respective areas.
He said the spray campaign would continue in each district in phases.
He said the people of Karachi had elected their representativesand they, despite financial crunch, would continue to serve their electorate. He said that the Sindh government had been approached to provide resources to the civic organisations so that the elected representatives could provide better civic amenities / services to the people of the metropolis. He said he hoped that funds would be provided soon.
Responding to queries from media persons regarding issues being faced by the fire brigade department (FBD) staff, he said efforts were being made and he hoped that the issues of the FBD staffers relating to salary and overtime payments would be resolved soon. He said efforts were also being made to get the fire tenders repaired / rehabilitated.
He said all the roads from which the Muharram processions were expected to pass had been cleaned, repaired and carpeted so that people did not face any dif ficulties. He said that areas around Imambargahs where majalis were to be held had also been cleaned and illuminated.
Speaking on the occasion, DMC-West chief Moeed Anwer said the required number of spray vehicles had been provided to the DMC and a spray campaign was beinglaunched instantly. He said the spray campaign would be repeated after every 15 days. He said the chairmen of the UCs would moni-tor the fumigation work in their respective areas and the people would also see and feel the qualitative change in service delivery.
