Demo against cattle market in residential area

GUJRAT: Scores of residents staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner office here on Wednesday against a private cattle market being established right in front of the Shahbaz Sharif parkbyaninnuendalgroup.
Owned by the Punjab government, the land adjacent to the Kathala railway underpass along GT Road had earlier been in possession of the Ministry of Defence.
As per the Local Government Act 2013, only the Cattle Market Management Company (CMMC),GUJRAT: Scores of residents staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner office here on Wednesday against a private cattle market being established right in front of the Shahbaz Sharif parkbyaninnuendalgroup.
Owned by the Punjab government, the land adjacent to the Kathala railway underpass along GT Road had earlier been in possession of the Ministry of Defence.
As per the Local Government Act 2013, only the Cattle Market Management Company (CMMC),Gujranwala, can allow such a market in Gujrat and it has already estabbshed such a set-up near Saroki village on Sargodha Road.
An influential group is all set to start business at the new site on Nov 11. This group is already running such cattle markets across the province, including one in Kharian city along GT Road.
On the other hand, locals as well as representatives of the civil society organisations have expressed concern over such an activity in f ront of a public park.
Hailing from Kathala, Ghazi Chak and River Graden housing colony, people held a demonstrationin front of the DC of fice against the cattle market.
Gujrat District Council Chairman Chaudhry Tanveer Kotla, in a written notice addressed to the influential group, said such a cattle market would be illegal and warned that a legal action might be taken against them.
Gujrat DC Muhammad Ali Randhawa told Dawn the administration was aware of such an illegal activity. He said a notice had been sent by the district council chairman to restrict the organisers from doing such a business in residential area. He said he would raise the issue with the quarters concerned.
