WATER is one of the basic necessities for human beings. Unfortunately, it is not available in some of the areas in Karachi where it is supplied, if at all, after a gap of many days. That being so, the water that is wasted due to leakage in water pipelines anywhere in the city is reflective of criminal negligence, and it should be dealt with sternly.
The main pipeline in North Karachi Sector-8 near Masjid Abu Bakar has developed a leak, leading to wastage of thousands of gallons of water. In fact, this is the water that needs to be supplied to area residents, who are suffering from an acute shortage of water.
Besides, the pipeline leak is causing a flood-like situation on the road, which has its own hazards.
The only reason behind such wastage of water is the negligent attitude of the authorities concerned who have been repeatedly approached to have the pipeline leak fixed. Nothing positive has happened after such complaints andrequests. The higher authorities should intervene to have the precious resource saved so that it may be provided to those who need it the most, and actually pay for it even when it is not being supplied.
