PPP legislator assails minister`s statement on electricity theft

ISLAMABAD: PPP`s MNA Ramesh Lal on Sunday criticised Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali for alleging that a majority of people in Larkana were involved in electricity theft.

Speaking at a news conference at his party`s media office, Mr Lal announced that he would submit a privilege motion in the National Assembly against the minister for making `false allegations` and cre-ating hatred within society.

The PPP legislator also asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to stop his minister from making statements which spoilt the political atmosphere as the same minister had previously made similar allegations about the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

At a recent news conference the minister had alleged that 98 per cent of the electricity used in the constituency of Faryal Talpur in Naudero was obtained by theft.

The minister had stated that mostof the electricity was stolen in Sukkur division and that the recovery of bills was less than 40 per cent.

He had also warned that the federal government would have to shut down all the feeders, if electricity theft was not curbed.

Mr Lal said that about 1,500 small and large rice mills were operating in Larkana and its suburbs and all of them were regularly paying utility bills. He asked the minister to take action against those who stole electricity and said the PPP would not create any hurdles.
