ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Tuesday stopped Yusr a Medical and Dental College, Rawat, from taking new admissions for the academic session 2016-17 due to the deficiency of faculty and other facilities.

The decision was taken after a PMDC team visited the college located on G.T.

Road after receiving complaints from the parents of students. The PMDC gave the college management 20 days to address the issues otherwise the college will be closed and the students will be distributed among other colleges. Moreover, the property of the college will be auctioned to compensate the students.

The college was recognised almost seven years ago when Dr Asim Hussain was controlling the council.

PMDC president Prof Dr Shabir Lahri told Dawn that a number of parents visited his office and informed him about the lack of facilities and poor quality of education at the college.

`I was also informed that there are three groups in the college and two persons at the same time have been claiming to be the principal of the college. So many times they have locked the doors of ofhces andthere has been tension on the campus,` he said.

`During our visit to the college, I was shocked to know that most of the complaints were correct.

`There was a lack of facilities, especially the teaching hospital was in a very poor condition,` he said.

In fact, it should not be called a hospital because most important departments such as the departments of eye, ENT and gynecology were not operational and a majority of beds were vacant, he said.

`We asked some questions from the students but they were not aware of most of the basic things. They did not even know how an injection is administered. I was disappointed by seeing the condition of the hospital and the quality of education,` he said.`I have asked the management to resolve their internal issues and ensure facilities and quality of education within 20 days otherwise we will have no option but to close the institute and accommodate the students in other colleges,` he said.

`Had I not cared for the 500 students, I would have sealed the college. If the issues are not addressed, I will auction the property of the college and reimburse the fees and other dues to the students,` he said.

In a statement, the PMDC said Dr Lahri along with member executive committee Dr Farrukh Eijaz conducted a snap visit to the medical college and examined the facilities.

The standard of the college was not up to the mark as per minimum criteria of the council and for training of 100 MBBS students in every session, it added.
