Sanitation a serious issue in G-7

2016-02-10
ISLAMABAD: Owing to apathy of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the residents of Sector G-7/4 are facing serious sanitation issues as the sewerage line in the area had been chocked and gutters were overflowing.

Complaints about poor sewerage system and chocked gutters are rampant in sector G-6, G-7, G-8, G-9 because of the decades old sewerage lines. According to the residents of the area, in sector G-7/4, several sewerage lines and gutters are overflowing and sewage even enters their washrooms making them filthy but no one from the CDA is fixing the problem as one of the two sanitary workers had gone on leave on January 29.

`The overflowing gutters and choked sewerage lines have made our washrooms unusable, and we cannot even make ablution,` said Mohamamd Saleem, a resident of the area.

The residents said they did take up the issue with the CDA`s inquiry office, which is supposed to fix this problem, but to no avail as, according to them, the civic agency is facing shortage of staff.

An official at inquiry office said there were only two sanitary workers for over 600 houses. However, one of them is on medical leave for the last many days, while the other one is unable to entertain huge number of complaints, he added.

He said that there should be at least four sanitary workers for this sector, because the complaints about chocked sewerage lines and gutters were very common in this area.

When contacted, the CDA`s director maintenance, Faisal Raza admitted that sanitation was a huge problem in G-7/4. He, however, said that a new staffer had joined the inquiry office and he would start fixing the problem from Wednesday. CDA`s spokesman Ramzan Sajid said that current management of the authority had decided to replace the sewerage lines. `Our teams are ever ready to fix the problem wherever it arises,` he said.
