RAWALPINDI: A customs official was suspended and five others were transferred to Customs Headquarters on Monday on charges of demanding bribe from a British traveler at Benazir International Airport.

Naveedur Rehman Baghwi, deputy collector customs, told Dawn a Britisher disclosed on the social media that on Feb 23 a customs official at Benazir airport asked him to pay 10 pounds and in return he would not check his baggage.

The passenger was traveling from Islamabad to Birmingham via Dubai on a foreign airliner. The DC customs said after preliminary inquiry, the customs official was suspended, though no formal complaint was lodged against him.

He, however, said five other customs officials who were on duty on Feb 23 at the International Departure Lounge were transferred to Customs Headquarters on Monday.
