PESHAWAR: A man detained on the charges of theft allegedly committed suicide in the lockup of Pishtakhara police station by hanging himself on Thursday.

A police statement issued here identified the suspect as Fawad, a resident of Taj Abad area who was detained under Section 380 of Pakistan Panel Code.

It said that Fawad was arrested after he was nominated in a case of theft of Rs50,000 and mobile phone. He was arrested earlier during the day and police also recovered about Rs30,000 from his possession, the police claimed in the statement.

The police said that at around 12:30pm the suspect went to the lockup`s bathroom and committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of trouser string. It said that the body had been sent to the Khyber Medical College for postmodem, while an inquiry had been initiated into the incident.
