LAHORE: The participants in a discussion on human and civic rights remembered lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir for her bravery during her struggle for human rights.
The discussion on `remembering Asma Jahangir` was held at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on Friday.
Rights activist I.A. Rehman, Salima Hashmi, Afrasiab Khattak and Raheemul Haq were on the panel while a number of students were present. Reema Umer was moderator of the event.
Speaking to the audience, Mr Rehman said Asma was trying to make the state responsible for human rights because the state was denying human rights to its citizens.
`Asma had stahed working after promulgation of the Hadood Ordinance by demanding the state end it. After she started working, she never looked back,` he said.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) was established for working on women, children, labour, minority and political rights, he added.
Mr Rehman said he did not see anyone more secular than Asma and she was proud to be a woman and always connected with every woman politician. She enjoyed womanhood and also loved cooking, he added.
Mr Rehman went on to say that they worked together for human rights but could not succeed in achieving the objectives as they also could not convince youth to work for human rights.
Afrasiab Khattak said Asma belonged to the generation which challenged dictatorship.
He said she was always of the view that peace could not be achieved without democracy and ensuring human rights.
