Sacred trust

DACCA: `Pakistan regards its minorities as a sacred trust and we consider it our paramount duty to give them the fullest protection, security, justice and fair play,` the Governor-General, H.E. Khwaja Nazimuddin, said in a statement issued here just before his departure for Karachi. He said he regarded the `manifestations of violence as most deplorable`.

The Governor-General called upon the people and the Press in East Pakistan to continue ... fullest cooperation ... to the Government in maintaining peace and complete harmony between the various communities in the Province. Commending the East Pakistan Government for their `promptitude and great firmness`, he reminded that no Government could perform such delicate duties without the cooperation of the people and the Press.

[He] said: `I have been very much distressed by the recent events in West Bengal and East Pakistan.

`I can have nothing but the deepest and most sincere sympathy for the victims of the communal frenzy in either country and I am sure that the two Governments would do everything they can to restore peace and confidence among the minorities... . ...
