Slaughter of calves banned

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority has banned the slaughter of calves in the province.

A statement issued here on Monday, the authority said the slaughter of calves was leading to the decreased number of animals thus, necessitating the ban. It said the butchers were slaughtering calves and mixing their meat with mutton, which itself amounted to food adulteration.

The statement said the authority would not allow indiscriminate slaughter of calves. It said the ban was notified after a meeting of the authority`s research committee.

Meanwhile, the authority said it had imposed fines amounting to Rs1.3 million on various eateries across the province.

The statement said a team sealed Cake Palace on the University Town road due to poor hygiene, while imposed a fine of Rs200,000 on Shereen Mahal sweets.

It said the team also checked Shelton Rezidor restaurant and found more than 30 expired items and imposed a fine of Rs500,000 on it. Bureau Report
