HRCP condemns FIA`s inquiry against Babar

By Our Staff Reporter 2025-04-10
ISLAMABAD: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Wednesday `strongly condemned` the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for launching an inquiry against former senator and a human rights activist Farhatullah Babar on the basis of a complaint filed by a citizen.

Similarly, the Pakistan People`s Party (PPP) has also termed the FIA`s action `regrettable`.

`Based on a private citizen`s complaint, the timing of this probe raises serious doubts as to its legitimacy, given that Mr Babar, who has been the driving force behind some of Pakistan`s most progressive legislations and also serves on HRCP`s governing council, has long been a vocal critic of state policies and institutions,` says the HRCP in a statement, terming it `yet another example of the state weaponising legal machinery to silence dissent and harass those who speak up.

`It is also a dangerous precedent, especially when the individual in question has contributed significantly to Pakistan`s democratic and human rights causes,` says the statement.

`The HRCP stands in solidarity with Mr Babar and demands that the inquiry be withdrawn and Mr Babar be issued a public apology by the state.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Spokesperson and MNA Shazia Marri in a statement said the FIA`s inquiry against senior PPP leader and former senator Farhatullah Babar was `regrettable`.

Ms Marri said it was extremely concerning that the FIA had initiated a baseless inquiry against Mr Babar.

For decades, she said, Mr Babar had stood with the oppressed, raised his voice for human rights, and consistently demanded accountability from those in power with dignity and moral insight.

Ms Marri said it was utterly ridiculous to accuse Mr Babar of abuse of power as he had not held any public office for over a decade.

She added that the inquiry, apparently initiated based on a private complaint, was not only untimely but also appeared to be motivated by questionable intentions.

She emphasised that Farhatullah Babar`s entire political career was a shining example of honesty, principled conduct, and commitment to democratic values. Such tactics not only undermine public trust in institutions but also demoralise those who have the courage to speak the truth, she said.
