Rahu, Fehmida worried over suicides

BADIN: Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) provincial chief Ismail Rahu and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Dr Fehmida Mirza on Tuesday expressed their concern over increasing trend of suicide by poverty-hit people of Badin.

Speaking to the media after offering his condolence to the relatives of a couple, Kewal Kohli and Najoo Kohli, who ended their lives on Sunday in a village near Rahuki, Mr Rahu said: `Aggravating poverty inthe province due to rampant corruption and deteriorating governance was forcing people to commit suicide`.

`People of Sindh are fed up with economic inequality, unfair distribution of resources and indifferent attitude of the government towards growers and farmers. The government`s flawed policies were leading them to starvation,` he added.

In her condolence message to the couple`s relatives, Dr Fehmida Mirza also expressed her grief over the incident and vowed to take up the issue at all forums.`Even though [Badin] district is rich in resources, people are forced to commit suicide due to hunger and not being able to get their sick children treated,` she said.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old educated woman reportedly committed suicide by jumping into Mirwah canal in Badin on Tuesday.

Kanwal Ansari was an MBA student. She had lef t her house for some urgent work but did not return home. Divers and volunteers started a search after her laptop and mobile phone were found placed on the dyke of the canal.
