RAWALPINDI: Divisional Commissioner Noorul Amin Mengal on Thursday asked the district administration to form a joint team of Water and SanitationAgency(Wasa)andRawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation (RMC) to clean 11 big nullahs of the garrison city.
He stated this in a meeting held here to review the cleanliness work of Leh Nullah and other 11 big nullahs within the city areas to avoid flood like situation during the upcoming monsoon season.
The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner (Coordination) Saif Anwar Jappa, Wasa Managing Director Tanveer Ahmed, Rawalpindi WasteManagement Company (RWMC) Managing Director Awais Manzoor Tarrar and other of ficials concerned of the district administration and RMC.
He said that there should be no encroachment on the banks of Leh Nullah anditwould be cleared as soon as possible.
The commissioner wanted Wasa to start dredging of 11 big nullahs in the garrison city. However, he was informed that in the past, RMC was responsible for the dredging of nullah.
Sources privy to the meeting said that Wasa had sought help of RMC and other civic bodies to complete the task like they did in the past. They said that Wasa wanted to do the work in coordination with other departments as they knew the trouble spots.
He said the RMC spent Rs60 millionlast year for cleanliness of nullah.
They said that Wasa demanded Rs50 million for the cleanliness of big nullahs but on the administration demand it reduced the amount to Rs40 million.
Meanwhile, the commissioner ordered cleaning of Leh Nullah and11 big drains that discharged in Leh Nullah as soon as possible.
He directed Wasa to set up its own check post at Leh Nullah to deal with the problem of dumping of solid waste and construction materials and to stop trolleys coming towards it especially at night. Briefing the Commissioner Rawalpindi on the occasion, the officials informed that the work of cleaning of 11 km long Leh Nullah was in progress and so far, Wasa had cleaned the nullah measuring 4.4 km.
