Call for holding survey on child labour

ISLAMABAD: While launching SPARC`s Annual Report on the State of Pakistan`s Children 2017, research representative Minal Kiani called for holding a survey on childlabour as this exercise has notbeen done since 1996.

Giving salient features of the report at the National Press Club on Monday , she said 22.6 million children of Pakistan were out of school, whereas the budgetary allocation for education is 2.5pc of the total GDP of Pakistan.

She said the number of juvenile prisoners by the end of December 2017 was 1,198.

Minal Kiani stressed the need for investing more in human capital development for higher productivity of individualsin thefuture.

The report also identiñed the increasing prevalence of violence against children in the country by presenting statistics regarding child marriages, honour killings and child sexual abuse, etc., in the country.

Ms. Manizeh Bano from Sahil said 3445 child sexual abuse cases were reported in 2017 from 4,139 in 2016.

President Heart Files Dr Sania Nishtar said infant mortality rate was 86 per 1000 live births in 2017 in Pakistan and the number of unsafe abortions each year is around 890,000.
