FOR the past three and more decades the country has watched with dismay how the people who exercise power behave like puppets performing at the signal of a third party. Gen Musharraf`s recent tirade seems to be the latest in this pantomime.
The former dictator`s statement has opened Pandora`s box at a time when elections are round the corner by accusing Asif Zaradri of the Benazir and Mir Murtaza murders.
In doing sothe generalforgotthat blaming others brings the spotlight to himself. How does he explain American journalist Mark Siegel`s testimony that Benazir had confided in him that Musharraf had threatened her that the government would not be responsible should anything happen to her.
On the other hand, many a political pundit considers Musharraf`s statement as an effort to stay in a political game where he is no more ef fective or relevant. In this scenario, Musharraf would do well to f ade into the background before past sins can catch up.
No one has forgotten the tragic memory of May 12, 2007, when Karachi was witness to a bloodbath in which more than 50 people died. If the MQM founder and its leaders are traitors, who nourished and nurtured these traitors for nine years? An impartial inquiry must be made to unmask Benazir`s killers as the country demnds the truth.
