Community in crisis

2023-10-10
I RECENTLY had to visit a police station in Karachi`s Malir City area to report the theft of certain accessories from my car.

No one was interested in having the report registered at all. After a lot of dillydallying, I was simply told to go home because the car was insured, and, as such, there was no need to file a complaint.

I felt disappointed, but not surprised at all. There is much more happening in Ghareebabad, a locality falling under the jurisdiction of the said police station, which fails to attract the attention of area police. Whether it is negligence or complicity, I have no way of knowing, but the unbridled expansion of drug dealing in the entire area is a fact that everyone knows. Hundreds of complaints have been filed at the local police station by area residents, but none of them has been responded to.

Among the most distressing aspects of this crisis is the involvement of minors in the drugtrade. They are exposednot only to the dangers of addiction, but also to the constantrisk ofgettingentangled in gang violence.

The sheerlack ofconcern onthe part of police has left the community at large feeling rather abandoned and defenceless. It is high time the relevant authorities took action against the culprits.
